| "... dance has
proved to be a powerful tool for community development
and participation..."
David Clarke, The State of The Arts |
Community dance is for everyone - it brings
people together to celebrate, to share and to dance together on
an equal basis.
The community dance movement in Wales has a
history spanning a quarter of a century. For over twenty years a
small, dedicated group of community dance practitioners came
together to support each other and share ideas. In 1989 the
group was formalised as Community Dance Wales, the national
umbrella body for community dance in Wales. The gradual and
thoughtful evolution of the art form, body of practice and its
considered and careful approach has meant that a strong national
infrastructure and framework has developed.
Community dance:
-
is a way of expressing who you are as an
individual and as a group
-
enables people to participate in and
create work that reflects their community
-
is a language for communication
-
is a powerful means of exploring and
developing cultural identity
-
encourages greater self esteem and
confidence
-
improves peoples' health and well being
-
increases employability
Community Dance Wales has a STATEMENT OF SHARED VALUES.
