EXTENSION Leaders in Dance

Introducing you to the skills you need to lead dance activities for young people in your community

What is the FOUNDATION Leaders in Dance course (LID)?
This is a course offering participants an introduction to the basic skills needed to lead dance for young people in the community.

What will I get at the end of the course?
On successful completion you will receive 6 credits at Open College Network (OCN) Level 2. OCN qualifications are nationally recognised by employers and the 'FOUNDATION Leaders in Dance-Youth' course will provide an introduction to the practical knowledge and skills needed to promote safe and appropriate dance activities in a wide range of youth settings.

Who is the course for?
The course is for anyone who enjoys dance and wishes to develop dance leadership skills. We welcome applicants from a range of different backgrounds and experiences, including dancers, youth workers, teachers, care workers and community workers.

You should be at least 16 years of age with some experience of dance and/or community work.

How is the FOUNDATION Leaders In Dance -Youth' course structured?
The course comprises of:

  • 36 hours of workshops 

  • 24 hours of 'Personal Time'

ASSESSMENT is by attendance, by completing the workbook, plus 'Personal Evaluation' and tutor assessment of practical sessions.

What kind of things will we study?

  • The role of the dance leader

  • Cultural diversity in Wales

  • Basic Health & Safety

  • Basic First Aid

  • Basic Anatomy & Physiology

  • Creating dance

  • Planning and Evaluation

EXTENSION Leaders in Dance

The CDW EXTENSION 'Leaders in Dance' is a part time course which is designed to follow on from the FOUNDATION COURSE 'Leaders in Dance - youth'. It will build on what you have learned at the FOUNDATION level allowing you time to reflect on and put into practice what you learn.

The course is accredited through Open College Network at Level 3 (approximately equivalent to 'A'level) and is worth 8 credits. Successful completion of this qualification, alongside your growing experience and dance skills, should equip you to begin to lead dance activities in appropriate settings.

** This course is not about YOU AS A DANCER, it is about your role in helping to enable and encourage other people to take part in dance activities.

OCN qualifications are nationally recognised by employers and the EXTENSION 'Leaders in Dance' course will offer the opportunity to explore in more depth, the core skills and knowledge you need to lead safe and appropriate dance activities in a wide range of settings. The course is relevant to potential dance practitioners, youth & community workers, teachers, dance students and anyone who is serious in their intention to lead dance activities in their community.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You must be17 years or over

  • have a genuine enthusiasm for dance

  • have considerable experience in at least one dance style

  • have successfully completed the FOUNDATION course OR

  • have evidence of knowledge and understanding of community dance leadership

  • have experience of dance leadership

Motivation, reliability and commitment to independent study are vital characteristics for anyone wishing to attend the course.

Acceptance on the EXTENSION 'Leaders in Dance' course will be at the discretion of Community Dance Wales.

There will be a local Course Leader with additional specialist tutors as required.

Topics to be covered during the course include:

  • Community dance - the importance of access, participation and social inclusion

  • Role of the dance leader - understanding of roles and responsibilities, teaching methods, motivating, recruiting

  • Dance leadership - planning, delivering and evaluating

  • Safe Practice - inc. Health & Safety, Anatomy & Physiology

EXTENSION 'LEADERS IN DANCE' comprises:

  • 45 hours of taught workshops / contact time with tutors

  • 20 hours of Independent Study e.g. research, observation, group tasks etc.

  • 15 hours of Personal Time e.g. completing workbook, practical dance sessions, seeing dance performance

ASSESSMENT is by:

  • Attending taught sessions (80% attendance is necessary to achieve accreditation).

  • Completing your PORTFOLIO

  • Personal Evaluation

  • Tutor assessment of your participation in practical workshop sessions

  • Tutor assessment of your practical application in context


It is necessary to complete ALL worksheets, exercises, evaluation forms in the PORTFOLIO to provide the OCN Moderators with satisfactory 'evidence of learning' in order to achieve the qualification.
